This is just a great place to stay!!! I spend three month there and cannot say anything else. The rooms are very nice, clean and cozy. You have your own bathroom right beside the rooms. I´m from Germany but never even missed my home because it was so comfortable
and relaxing there. You can really make yourself at home and use everything whenever you want to. JoAnn and Glenn are real fun and easy to get along with.
I just can say: go for it!

I stayed here as a visiting professor to Stanford from Columbia for the month of February 2007 and loved it. It's something of an oasis: a beautiful area, lovely home and room, in a peaceful and warm household. There are buses and trains but I cycled in and out of Stanford every day (about a 20 minute cycle through quiet streets). Even though I was there for a short while I felt fully at home right away and would go back in a second.

I stayed with Glen and Joann for almost three months while I finished an internship in San Carlos. I loved the house, the room, the location, and, of course, Glen and Joann were awesome!!! I'd go back in a second! The room was really nice, I felt really comfortable in the house from the day I moved in, and JoAnn and Glen took good care of me :) Thanks!

A great place to stay! The house is in a nice and quiet gated community. Walk distance to grocery store. The room are all furnitured and comfortable just like at home. Price is very reasonable. Most of all, JoAnn and Glen are very easygoing, helpful landlord and interesting to talk with. I really felt very relaxing and enjoyed my stay.

Bike distance to Stanford (Which I do everyday) also close to train station.

My name is Hugo. I’m a researcher from Barcelona, Spain. I’m staying in the Glenn and Joann’s house from August to December 2007 and I’m loving it. The house is big, beautiful and clean! and the neighborhood is quiet and very safe. They are a friendly couple (like a family for me). I went to play golf, to surfing, to dinner out etc, with them. The biking road from the house to Stanford is 25 minutes and I love it because you bike around Atherton and Menlo Park, between a lot of trees, big houses and small streets. JoAnn and Glenn are really very nice persons, and I enjoyed in their house all the period of my 4-months visit to Stanford. If I will be invited to Stanford once more, first I shall ask JoAnn and Glenn if they will have a room at that period.
Everything was fine: Kitchen, garazhe, laundry, INTERNET, shopping in a walk distance, university in a biking distance and what is the most important - so friendly landlords!

Hi Joann,
I read about the room at Stanford website, and I am interested.
However, I cannot find any contact information.
If the room is still available please let me know your information or you can contact me at 650-722-4545. If I don't answer, please leave me a message.
Thanks.

I stayed with Glenn and JoAnn for almost a year, and it has been an amazing place to live. I felt almost like part of the family with them and the other roommates, and all of us would often have dinner together or go out to different places. Most other roommates are also Stanford visitors, so it was great to sometimes bicycle to campus together, or talk to them at home.

The room I stayed in was great, the house was spacious and clean, and it's located in a safe and quiet neighborhood within biking distance from Stanford. Best of all, Glenn and JoAnn have been very helpful and accommodating whenever I needed anything else, from storage space in the garage, to advice on where to go fishing, to figuring out how to park my car while I was on a long trip, to friends staying with me, and so on.

I would highly recommend this place to anyone who is visiting Stanford, and this is the first place I'll look if I come back to Stanford again.

Nickolai.

As a visiting scholar at Stanford, I’ve stayed here for almost three
months and it has been a fantastic stay. JoAnn and Glenn have made their cozy, comfortable and charming place a second home for me. I really appreciate their friendship, loving and caring, especially JoAnn who is always making sure that every thing goes
right for my stint here. After a long hard-working day, our conversations around the dining table in the evening with good humor and great appreciation
for knowledge and cultural diversity make me feel right at home! The bike ride to campus is
lovely and the swimming pool is not to be missed! So, at the end, I got a lot of work done, reading and writing, while staying at their house. And I look forward to coming back to this friendly place when I return to Stanford!

I stayed at Glenn and JoAnn's house for almost 4 months from July till Oct '08. I thoroughly enjoyed my time while staying at their house, and both, Glenn and JoAnn took extra care to get me situated comfortably in their house and familiarize me with the surroundings. Getting to know the RIGHT places for grocery, dry cleaning, general shopping, etc. was very helpful.

The room I had was fully furnished, well lighted, with a very comfortable mattress/bed. The house is very spacious and all the roommates were encouraged and allowed to use the kitchen, living room, backyard as per our convenience. I would highly recommend this place for anyone visiting Stanford for a short/long term.

Glenn and JoAnn are great people. They are very friendly and fun to talk and hang-out with. We often had dinner together and used to go out for coffee/drinks/movies. They were very helpful in finding an apartment for me (now that my family is here, I have moved out of their place) and also organized my move into the new place. I cant thank them enough!

I am very happy to have great new friends in Glenn and JoAnn and look forward to meeting them regularly till next summer when my visit at Stanford gets over.

I am postdoc at Stanford and I stayed at Glenn and JoAnn's house for 5 months from September ‘08 until Jan ‘09 before my wife joined me in the US and we got an apartment together.
From the very first day on, I felt at home in Glenn and JoAnns house and I had a great time staying there. My room was fully furnished, well lighted, with a very comfortable mattress/bed and the bathroom was very nice and clean. I was able to use the kitchen as well as do laundry without restrictions. You have also free wireless high-speed internet at Glenn and JoAnns place.
The bike ride to Stanford takes around 20-25 min and is very nice. It takes you through the upper class neighborhood of Atherton and there isn’t much traffic, so it is pretty safe.
The other roommates I met were all very nice and we had a lot of fun and amazing discussion in kitchen while cooking or drinking a glass of wine, or going out for dinner or to the movies.
Glenn and JoAnn were very helpful finding the right place for groceries, shopping or for doing sports. They also helped me and my wife finding an apartment, bedding, furniture and all the little things you need to get started. This made our life much easier and we are very thankful for that. I think Glenn and JoAnn’s is a great place to stay for anyone visiting Stanford for a short/long term.

Last year I stayed as a visiting professor at Stanford and spent 3 month in the house of JoAnn and Glen. Being beyond the forties I was very sceptical how this could work out, living in a single room, but all concers were unnecessary. There was a warm welcome and I felt at home from the very beginning. JoAnn and Glen share their home with all the people who live there and that means really sharing! I felt at home with no restrictions. Both of them are very tolerant people and they are more than interested in the people who stay with them. There was a lot of cooking, talking, discussing (especially during the president election period) and never any problem. This is a highly recommendable place to enjoy a very special hospitality. JoAnn and Glen were very supportive and helped wherever they could.

I stayed with JoAnn and Glen for six month while I was a visiting researcher in the Stanford GPS Labs. It was a really great place to stay. It is a great atmosphere in the house and you can make full use of the kitchen. I would recomend this place to everyone. It is hard to imagine that people do not come along with JoAnn and Glen, they are really fun people.
I biked to Stanford every day. Its about a 25 minute ride, but it is a nice ride through Atherton(I think one of the most expensive areas of the US) and you always bike on side-streets without much traffic.

So this house is definetly a "safe pick" and you won't regret this choice.

I am an undergraduate student from Minnesota. I stayed with Glenn and Joann for three months while working on an internship at Stanford. The house is really big and clean. The backyard is an amazing place to sit and read. The neighborhood pool is less than a block away. Glenn and Joann are really friendly, we went surfing and barbecued frequently. Redwood City is really nice it is almost exactly half way between San Francisco and San Jose. San Francisco is about a 35 minute train ride from here.
This is a great place to be for a while!

I am a student from vienna, Austria and i stayed at the macdonell mansion for 3,5 months during my stay abroad at stanford university. i really enjoyed the stay at joann and glenn's house and i can only confirm what the other roommates were already posting. it was less a landlord-tennant relation but i felt more like being part of the family… joann and glenn are both great persons with a great sense of humour and very supportive. they are always ready to talk about what happened during the day or for discussions on various topics but on the other hand they totally respect your private sphere at any time.
the room and the whole house were clean and in very good condition and i could use the kitchen and all other utilities whenever i wanted to.
The bike route to Stanford may appear a bit long for a daily ride but it hardly contains slopes and leads through a really nice neighbourhood and i enjoyed it a lot.

i can really recommend you to stay at joann and glenn’s - you will not regret it...

I lived with Glenn and Joann for four months over fall 2009, during my time as visiting scholar at Stanford GSB.

I have to agree with all the previous comments. The house is large and clean. Glenn and JoAnn are happy to share their house with you, rather than just rent a room out to you. They're both easy going and willing to include you in their lives, and at the same time are happy to let you do your own thing and respect your privacy.

I was amazed at how quickly I felt comfortable after moving to their house, and their attitude is the reason. I am very glad that I chose to live with them for my visit (and they chose me)... they do become like family to you if you'll let them! :) Of course, the downside is that you'll miss them when you move out and will be nostalgically reminiscing about your stay for a while.

As most of the others who stayed here, I biked back and forth between Stanford and home. I loved bicycling there, and I took a different route than Nikolai (see earlier comment); across the elementary school like him, and then a faster but longer way:
http://tinyurl.com/yc375qb
I'd recommend that one rather than through Atherton (shorter but more stop signs) if you have a road bike and are relatively quick.

I miss you guys, hope to see you again at some point.

I stayed at JoAnn’s and Glenn’s house while working as a visiting scholar at Stanford University from January till March 2010. It was a very pleasant stay and I would recommend this housing option to everyone. Nice things include but are not limited to: (i) bikes are provided (I biked everyday to Stanford University), (ii) rooms are clean and well-lighted, (iii) kitchen and laundry areas can be used without any restrictions, (iv) JoAnn and Glenn are always helpful, open for a conversation, and respecting your privacy, (v) grocery stores and fast-food chains are in walking distance, (vi) two car rental stations are reachable by a 1.5 mile walk, and (vii) nice and safe neighborhood. Overall I am happy that I stayed at JoAnn’s and Glenn’s house. It made life a lot easier and comfortable for me.

Choosing to rent a room in JoAnn and Glenn’s house was definitely the best choice I’ve taken since I started to plan this trip. This is because of many reasons. First of all, renting a room is not just solving the accommodation problem in a very fortunate way, as the conditions offered were excellent, but because the period spent there is as a whole a great life experience and life lesson. I say this because you will have the chance to meet some of the most beautiful people you could probably have ever met. JoAnn and Glenn are an example of friendship, generosity and openness. Unavoidably, you will realize at the end of your stay that you will leave behind two of your best friends. Their attitude is always open and kind, and in the same time, discrete and well-mannered, and you’ll never find it as inappropriate. To me, at least, they became as parents and very much of the regret for ending my stay in Redwood City is linked to the fact that I might have never again the chance to meet them again, due to the distance from my home place to Bay Area, and opportunities that might take me elsewhere in the world. But, if my life will take me again to Bay Area, I will definitely look for a room to rent in JoAnn and Glenn’s house. Then, by renting a room there is a great opportunity to understand and experience the great American life style. So, you do not just rent a room, but you as well give a chance to yourself to take some surfing lessons, to fish, snorkel or dive for abalones in the Pacific Ocean (Glenn is an excellent teacher for all of these), you give yourself the chance to visit some excellent places in California and find out their history greatly storied by Glenn and JoAnn. The hosts were so kind that they almost invited me in every trip they did, so at the end of my 3-month stay there I summed up lots of trips and experiences facilitated by them. You may also learn some baseball, basketball or any other sports that Glenn is always happy to share with you. The third reason for which I recommend this place is its excellent conditions: everything is very clean, rooms are well equipped, quietness of the whole house, excellent neighborhood, the supermarkets are very close, free access to laundry machine and dryer, and to all things in the kitchen. The area is very safe and clean, and you may have free access to the pool that is only 50 meters away. In the price of the rent of the room, a bike that you may use for the whole stay period is always available, and I found it very convenient to use for my daily trips to Stanford University.
As a conclusion, I would say that I am that sure that you will love staying there that I would agree to pay for your stay if you would not find the stay there as an excellent option at the end of it. I am saying this because I am very positive that it will not be the case, as I am very sure you will love your experience in JoAnn and Glenn’s house.
I write this at a week from my coming back to my home country, after three months of occupying a room there, and it expresses my pure and sincere oppinion. Take care and go for it, you will love the experience there! Marius

It's a wonderful experience. The room was very nice and clean,

me feel at home.

I'd highly recommend staying with the McDonells when visiting

I stayed at Glenn and JoAnn's house for 10 weeks in summer 2010, and I had a wonderful experience. The house is a 4 BR, 3 bath (one BR/B occupied by Glenn and JoAnn) in a quiet, gated community, and you have full access to laundry, internet, kitchen, grill, and living areas. From the moment I arrived I was treated like a member of their family, and really enjoyed the camaraderie between the other roommates and the MacDonell's. Make no mistake, the house is meant to be a quiet, scholarly place where residents can get work done and get a good night's rest, but we also took time to get to know one another and enjoy each other's company. I lucked out to get an available room for the time I was here (especially considering the rent), and hope there will be room for me if I return next summer.

The time I spend in the McDonell house was perfect, the family is extremly friendly and I feel like living with good friends. We had BBQ few times a week and the family give me a perfect opportunity to learn how the american way of life is. I was invited by the Glenn and Joann to do many things I never did before, shooting ranch and surfing. Glenn loves to surf and he learn me how to surf in santa cruz, forthermore he is very sportive and we dive and do bench press together. summa summarum it was perfect. I was working in stanford and had a good possibility to work and write on my projects in the evening because the house is very quite. The offer me a bike so I can ride to the univercity daily very ease. It was the best time for me and I miss the family when I was back in Germany. I can highly recommend the house and living there.
Very clean and comfortable.

I agree with all previous comments: JoAnn's and Glen's house was a perfect place for me to stay! I was there for three months and felt like at home from the first until the last day. I think we were not just roommates but more like friends, having a beer or glas of wine in the evening, watching the Giants win ;-)) and the 49ers lose :-(, going surfing with the surf instructor (Glen), or shopping with the shop instructor (JoAnn), having a BBQ, etc. Also my other roommates were great (JoAnn really makes some efforts to find a good mixture!) and I enjoyed the bike rides to Stanford which were a perfect work out!

I am a German PhD student and stayed with Glenn and JoAnn for almost one year (January – December 2011). Glenn and JoAnn have been great hosts/housemates and we became good friends. I really liked the relaxed and friendly atmosphere in their house, the spontaneous BBQs in the backyard, and the support housemates gave each-other. If you are busy at work in Stanford, this house will be your oasis. If you are thinking to stay in their house, either for a short and longer period of time: Go for it! It has been a great experience to get to know Glenn and JoAnn and I wished I stayed longer with them.

I stayed at JoAnn and Glenn's from 2010 to 2012 when I was a postdoc at Stanford. The house is beautify (and a maid comes regularly to clean the public area and the bathrooms!) and the neighborhood is great. JoAnn and Glenn are just wonderful people -- kind, friendly, thoughtful and extremely generous (they threw a lot of bday parties for the housemates!). I had a great time staying at their house. Still miss the BBQs at the backyard!

I stayed with JoAnn and Glenn for about 11 months and it was a really great
time. I have to agree with what the other roommates wrote: The house is great
and kept clean at all the time. Glenn and JoAnn are happy to share it with you,
rather than just rent a room out to you. They're both great and are willing to
include you in their lives or let you do your own thing and respect your
privacy, it depends on you. They have been great housemates and we became close
friends. For me it felt like being home, e.g. the backyard where we had many
funny BBQs or go surfing with Glenn.
I highly recommend this place to anyone who is visiting Stanford, and this is
the first place will go to if I ever come back to the area.

I came to the bay area to start my postdoc position at Stanford University. At first i wanted to stay with JoAnn and Glenn for a couple of month but ended up staying over 3 (Three!) years. From that you can easily guess that I had a great time!
The only reason for me moving out was that I started an new job at a biotech company in San Francisco.

Especially during the first months in a new area it was super helpful to have reliable room mates that can answer your basic questions and introduce you to the Californian life style.

JoAnn and Glenn made me feel at home from the very beginning on. They are very open minded and I also had the pleasure to meet the rest of their great family. These get-togethers usually happen in the nice backyard with great BBQs, nice wines and lots of laughter.

And if you want to do your own thing, read a paper in your room or you need some alone time, no problem. The area is very quiet and JoAnn and Glenn will give you enough room and privacy.

The house is nice and spacious and you can (and you will be encouraged to by JoAnn and Glenn) use all of it. This includes also the surf boards in the garage ;-) Glenn, an experienced surfer himself, will sure be happy to take you out on one of his trips to Santa Cruz.

Ah yes, there is a pool. The pool is awesome! Especially as the Redwood City has the best climate in the bay area (sunny during the day and you get the nice cool Pacific breeze at night).

I actually learned proper free style swimming during my stay at the McDonell house. Get up in the morning, jump in the pool, do a couple of laps and bike to Stanford. You will be relaxed and ready for a productive day.

Yes bike! Get a bike! You can easily bike to Stanford, Menlo Park or Palo Alto along a very safe bike route through Atherton. This way you can also enjoy the impressive mansions.

To sum this up,
Incredible location with great people for a really (really) fair price.

Dennis said...

My name is Dennis. After I finished my PhD in Germany, I started a position as a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford in 2013. When I was looking for housing in the area a former group member of my research group recommended me to move in with Glenn and Joann. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I have ever made. The communication from Europe worked great and when I finally came to the US everything went well.

Since it was my first time living in the US, I was not familiar with a lot of things in the country. Glenn and Joann were always very helpful and understanding. They have very helpful recommendations of local events and shops. They will support you in any way you can think of. You can ring them up on the phone and they will even give you a ride if you need one.

I was feeling at home right away and the only reason why I had to move out is that I found a job in the East Bay and it would be a hell of a commute from Redwood City. Initially I was planning on moving back to Europe, but Glenn and Joann made me appreciate the Californian live style and now I can't really think of moving back to Europe.

The neighborhood is fantastic. It is quiet and really beautiful. The pool and the park are great assets. Especially on the weekends you can enjoy hanging out by the pool and swimming are great activities.

The house itself is spacious with two floors, a garage and a great backyard. The backyard was my favorite spot to hang out and relax. Glenn and Joann will make the entire house available to you. This included using their kitchen utensils and you will even get provided with towels and sheets. And yes, there is a maid too. Your bathroom will be cleaned every two weeks, which is fantastic. Dish washer, washer and dryer are also available at now additional cost as well as high speed internet. This is a really good deal. You get a furnished apartment and everything you need for a great price.

Glenn, Joann and the entire McDonell family are awesome. They have a lot of stories to share! I really enjoyed being around them. You can have privacy if you need to. Glenn and Joann have become really good friends of mine and I still visit once in a while. You will have a great time with them.

I would like to reiterate the point that Jens made: GET A BIKE! Although I had a car I really enjoyed biking to Stanford. Depending on you location on the campus it is a 20-30 min bike ride. You will pass by the beautiful mansions in Atherton and Menlo Park. It's a fresh start into the day and you can clear you thoughts when you bike home later in the day. You should have a bike on the Stanford campus anyways.

In summary, I loved to life with Glenn and Joann and I recommend this place with all my heart. It is a great location with even greater people.

Staying with Joann and Glenn for the last 6 months has really taken the pressure off and made my move to a new country and job much easier. Here you are surrounded by friendly people full of helpful advice and you get to stay in a lovely house with all the amenities you could hope for. A normal day in the house for me would look like this: I wake up early and go to the community pool (just 100 m away) for a morning swim. I make breakfast in the well equipped kitchen, where I have my own shelves in the fridge. I especially like to use the toaster-oven for grilled sandwiches. Then I have my meal in the couch outside in the quiet green garden. Often I stay at the house a few hours in the morning to get some writing done since its so calm. Then I bicycle (on the bike provided) to Stanford campus through Atherton, where there is less traffic. It takes me about 30 minutes from A-B. In the evening when I get back the house is full of life and I chat with Glenn, Joann and whoever else is around while making some dinner. After that I retreat for some quality Netflix time (Internet provided). No-one ever bothers you in your room, so there is a good balance of privacy vs socializing. Then I fall asleep in the very comfortable bed (better than my own at home!). As for the bathrooms, I first shared one and then during the last months I had my own. Either way they were always kept clean and everyone has been very respectful.

I can really recommend this place. It is a great deal all around!

I have stayed with JoAnn and Glenn for over a year and will forever be grateful to them for letting me stay in their comfortable home. You can find quiet and privacy in your room, but socializing with the housemates in the kitchen or common areas is always an option. I have learned so much from JoAnn and Glenn, everything from the latest tax regulations to how to correctly de-bone a fish. I will miss our intellectually stimulating conversations! Looking forward to retaining my housemates as lifelong friends. :)
